Shipwrecks!

I only recently learned of the Royston Shipwrecks, on Vancouver Island. It turns out that 14-15 old ships were deliberately sunk (over a period of more than 20 years, from 1936-1959) as part of a breakwater. Now they have decayed to the point that there is little left above the waterline of the destroyers, frigates, windjammers, harpoon boats and tugs that rest in those waters.

Several of the Rusty Wrecks

While there are only a few larger, recognizable sections of the ships visible, it is still worthwhile stopping by to view and photograph them. From shore there is probably a lot that you miss, as access is limited to the breakwater and it is marked with a Danger – No Trespassing sign, although this doesn’t stop the wide variety of birds and sea-life in the area. I would like to go back some day with my kayak to get a little closer and check it out from different angles.

Plenty of Birds Around the Wrecks

Set across the water from Comox, with majestic, snow capped mountain peaks beyond, it is a beautiful spot to visit and I look forward to returning there when I visit the area in the future.
